Loyd Ervin Harris, Ph.D., Dean
of the College of Pharmacy from 1963 to 1970, earned three degrees
from the University of Oklahoma. In 1920, before the School of
Pharmacy was 30 years old, Loyd Harris received a Ph.G. degree from
the School of Pharmacy. He then went on to get a Ph.C. in 1922, a
B.S. in 1922, and an M.S. in 1924, all from the University of
Oklahoma School of Pharmacy. He then went to the University of
Wisconsin and received his Ph.D. in Chemistry in 1926.
Dean Harris first became a faculty
member of the OU School of Pharmacy in the fall of 1921, teaching
pharmacy and later chemistry. The College catalogs through the years
listed Dr. Harris as a Professor of Pharmacy. Dean Harris was a
member of the faculty from 1921 to 1941 and has been associated with
the College for nearly sixty years as a student, faculty member,
Dean, or Dean Emeritus. He has known every dean of the College.
While Dean, Dr. Harris presided
over many changes from a four- to a five-year program, and the
clinical pharmacy program was established for the senior year. Also
during Dean Harris's tenure, the decision was made to move the
College to Oklahoma City to become part of the Health Sciences
Center. Dean Harris was also instrumental in initiating continuing
education for pharmacy in Oklahoma.
