Setting up NCSA Telnet for use with MacMosaic and CDPlus Medline (at OUHSC)

MacMosaic will automatically initiate telnet sessions using NCSA Telnet (if available on your hard disk). At OUHSC there is a slight problem when trying to access the CDPlus Medline System at the Bird Library. It may be difficult to get 'past' the initial log-in point if the 'return' key is not configured properly. NCSA Telnet v2.6 is available with a file

'NCSA Telnet Preferences'

This Preference file can be placed in the Preference Folder of your System Folder. This Preference file contains the configurations required to access the Research and Education computers and the catalogs at the Bird Library on the OUHSC Campus. If you are outside the OUHSC campus you may be better off discarding this Preferences file.

Setting up NCSA Telnet for the CDPlus System

Start the program by double clicking on the 'NCSA Telnet' icon.

1) Select 'Preferences > Sessions' from the 'Edit' menu

2) Double click on the Default item or select it and click on the 'Change' button

3) Make sure that the item 'Berkeley 4.3 CR mode' is checked and click 'OK' to save the default change and 'OK' to save the Sessions change

This change seems to be necessary so that the CDPlus/Medline system responses correctly

Starting a CDPlus Medline Session at OUHSC

Using NCSA directly Start the program by double clicking on the 'NCSA Telnet' icon.

Select 'Open Special > CDPlus_at_BirdLib' from the 'File' menu

Using MacMosaic Navigate to the correct page and click on the On-line Medline Search item

In both cases the NCSA Telnet program should start up and connect to the system. The login procedure is described below [required keyboard entry - comments]:

In general items need to be selected by moving to the item using the arrow keys or ^ or v. The item is selecting using 'x' or the spacebar. Pressing 'x' or the spacebar again deselects the item. Pressing RETURN completes the selection process.

During the citation search and browse process various control combination are available. The choices are generally presented at the bottom of the screen. These are displayed as ^E or ^B for example for control-E or control-B. To enter these keys press the control key down and at the same time press the letter (lower case is OK).

...from here you need to read the literature available from the Bird Library for use of the CDPlus - Medline system.

After logging out from the Medline system, the following will be displayed
