Setting up MacPPP for PPP connection

PPP (Point-to-point Protocal) connections to the campus network are now possible. Using the Macintosh computer you will need MacTCP and the MacPPP package. The MacPPP package is available locally from the OUHSC COP ftp Server.

Putting the parts in place

The two components of the MacPPP package, PPP and Config PPP, should be dragged-and-dropped onto the System folder. PPP should go in the extension folder and Config PPP should go in the control panels folder. MacTCP should also be dragged-and-dropped onto the System folder and will end up in the control panels folder.

Setting up MacTCP

Double-click on the MacTCP icon in the Control Panels folder. This should bring up the first MacTCP panel. Make sure that the PPP icon is selected then press the More... button. In the second panel click on the Server radio button. Note the Class set to A for the OUHSC campus. Check with Networking for the correct information about the Domain Name Server and the Gateway Address. [The numbers here are not correct.] If you are at another campus, other settings will be necessary, check with your local network administrator.

Setting up MacPPP

Double-click on the Config PPP icon in the Control Panel folder.
First ConfigPPP dialog window
Click on the Config... button to bring up the next panel.

Enter the PPP server name, port speed, flow control, phone number (ask networking for the correct number), and modem init string (your modem may need other settings). Click the Connect Script... button to enter the connection script information.

The connect sequence that works for the SCB server is shown here. E-mail the postmaster@uokhsc.edu for details about changes to the connect scripts for Trumpet or Win95 PPP connections.

More details about MacPPP can be found in the file macppp.txt provided with the MacPPP package. Thanks to Merit Network, Inc. and The Regents of the University of Michigan.

Using MacPPP

Using MacPPP is somewhat automatic. Open an IP aware program such as Mosaic, Fetch, etc. and MacPPP will dial the number and connect automatically. Hopefully :-)

MacPPP connections can also be opened and closed using the Config PPP control panel.
