Using Mac OS 10.2.2

Open System Preferences and click on the Network Panel

Click on the PPP Tab and make the entries shown. Of course use your Account Name and Password.

Click on the Modem Tab. These settings worked for me using the Apple supplied modem.

Using System 7.6.1 (MacOS 8 is similar/same)

Using the Three Control Panels

The Internet 'Wizard' in MacOS 8 sets most of these control panels for you. However, the 'wizard' partly assume that you are using a commercial Internet Provider.

PPP Control Panel. The OUHSC Server accessed from 271 8670 performs authentication so a connection script is no longer required. Choose 'Registered User', enter your name and password, check 'Save Password' and enter the access telephone number. NOTE: The 'OUHSC\' NT domain name is no longer required in the Name field!!! This information can be entered in the older Config PPP control panel by selecting the Authentication... option instead of the Connect Script... option.

Once all the control panels are set-up properly you will return to this control and press the 'Connect' button to make the PPP connection.

PPP Initial Dialog - Check Registered User

Click Options... to open up the Options Dialog. Many of these settings can be left unchanged.

The 'Redialing' option can be used to set an alternate number or other redial options.

PPP/Options - Redialing

The 'Connection' options can be altered to refine the connection settings but can be left unchanged.

PPP/Options - Connection

The 'Protocol' options can also be left unchanged. The 'Connect to a command-line host:' and 'Use terminal window' can be useful for diagnosing connection problems EXCEPT when authentication is being used...as with the OUHSC PPP server through the 271-8670 number!

PPP/Options - Protocol

The Modem control panel can be opened from the PPP menu

The TCP/IP control panel can be opened from the PPP menu

Modem Control Panel. This control panel is used to select the model script file. THIS IS IMPORTANT. Using the wrong modem script will give poor to bad results. Select your modem from the pop-up menu. Your modem is in the list?

Modem Dialog - Select your modem

TCP/IP Control Panel. Select 'PPP' as the connection method and 'Configure' using the PPP Server. The OUHSC PPP server will assign the IP Address and other TCP/IP settings as shown below. You should however enter the Name server address. The numbers shown are the OUHSC domain name servers (157.142.8.2 and 157.142.41.2). 'ouhsc.edu' can be entered as the search domain name.

PPP Dialog - Select PPP/Using PPP Server

The 'Option...' button leads to the dialog below. TCP/IP should be 'Active'. The 'Load only when needed' may need to be unchecked. There have been reported problems with this item checked but it seems to be working ok with system 7.6.1 :-).

TCP/IP Options - Make active

When every thing is set up and a connection is made the PPP Control Panel with display the designated IP number and connection speed. Click on the 'Disconnect' button to close the connection.
